A Dissertation Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for Award of the Degree of Master of Business Administration (MBA) of Mzumbe UniversityThe study on hindrances facing Tanzania women entrepreneurs in accessing finance from commercial banks was conducted at Ilala Municipality. The objectives of the study were; to identify hindrances pertaining to business environment of women entrepreneurs; to identify hindrances pertaining to banking practice and to identify strategic ways of financing women entrepreneurs from commercial banks. A case study design was used whereas a sample of 120 was involved. In collecting primary data the study used questionnaire and interview. Secondary data were collected through documentary analysis. Data was analysed by using SPSS, tables and figures were used to present data. The study found that, most of the respondents (37.5%) were affected by lack of women entrepreneurs associations as a major hindrances pertaining to business environment of women entrepreneurs. Also, the study found that majority of the respondents (58.2%) revealed that laws and regulations as a major hindrances pertaining to banking practice. Moreover, the study found that, majority of the respondents (59.2%) suggested lowering interest rate could improve loans accessibility to women businesses. The study concluded that there are various hindrances pertaining to business environment of women entrepreneurs. Some of these involve; bureaucracy and corruption, laws and regulations/ high interest rate, lack of women entrepreneurs associations, custom challenges and low entrepreneurial and management skills. Also, the study concluded that some laws and regulations impede banks practices. The study recommended that extending credit alone is not sufficient condition to reduce women challenges and improve productivity and income for small business owners in Tanzania. Therefore, additional intervention that goes hand in hand with micro financing should be implemented.
