dc.description The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact and the role of effective leadership in improving quality of secondary education in Tanzania. The researcher used qualitative and quantitative approaches. Three research instruments were used to collect data from the respondents namely interview, questionnaires and documents from various sources. The questionnaires and interviews were all done in Temeke district in Dar es Salaam region. Secondary data were obtained from the internet and archives. The analysis showed that effective leadership has great role in influencing quality of education. The study indicated that the major challenges educational leaders face are lack of enabling environment, lack of frequent evaluation and inspection of secondary education, clear vision, and education philosophy, school culture. In addition, eighty six percent (87%) of the respondent agree that quality of education is more than just academic performance. Final conclusion is that; Continuous improvements in education remain theoretical without effective leadership at all the levels of the education system and institutions. Commitment to quality has to be the prime role of leaders. Quality improvement is too important to be left to the quality coordinators. To succeed in education TQM requires strong and purposeful leadership is necessary. If leadership is ineffective, improvement in the quality of secondary education will be difficult if not impossible.
