The aim of this study was to assess the determinants of quality of education at
secondary school level: A case study of Songea Municipal Council. Mainly the study
aimed to assess the influence of various determinants of education inputs in
secondary schools and the consequent intended education outputs. The study started
by assessing various education input factors including, School factors, Student
factors and Government factors. The study involved a sample of 223 respondents
who were students and 80 teachers from 8 different schools and all respondents
returned back their questionnaires. Data were analyzed by using descript statistics by
the aid of SPSS and Microsoft excel.
The findings indicated that, most of the students still are not aware of the concept of
education quality. The findings also indicated that at students factors most of
students lack passion to study, distance to school. At school based factors
infrastructures especially fittings in most of the schools seem to be a very big
challenge. Other challenges are poor teachers to student ratio, poor teachers‟
professional qualifications, inadequacy of learning materials, and to some extent
shortage of students‟ accommodation at schools. For the case of the government
factor it was revealed that, congruence of the text books was a problem, teachers are
not satisfied with their job and language of instruction was problems that require
attention and most respondents suggested to use Kiswahili as language of
instructions at school. The conclusion showed that among the factors infrastructures
is the most challenges which affect the quality of education at secondary school
level. |
