This study aimed at assessing the contribution of microfinance institutions towards
women empowerment in Morogoro region. It explained all the three specific objectives
which were first, assessing the contribution of microfinance institutions to the social
wellbeing of women. Secondly, examine the impact of microfinance institutions to the
economic development of women and the last objective was to find out the challenges
facing local women in the credit acquisition from microfinance institutions.
These results showed generally that; first microfinance institutions have positive and
higher contribution to the social wellbeing of women; secondly the study found that
microfinance institutions have positive impact to the economic development of women.
Furthermore the results found eight challenges facing local women in the credit
acquisition from microfinance institutions. However the main challenge is the higher
interest rates.
In this study we have found that the MFIs in collaboration with the government through
its organs such as the ministry of finance should increase funds for more women to
borrow. In the same sense education should be provided on the importance to repay
loans in time, clients also should be allowed whenever never possible to use personal
collaterals in getting loans, the value of collaterals should be the same as the amount of
loan to be provided. Furthermore there is a need to a survey on the sufficient time for
loan to be repaid.
