dc.description The study focused on the understanding and applicability of corporate social responsibility by small scale mining companies in Geita, with Nyakagwe Resources, Busolwa Mine, Mwanza Mara Mineral Processing and Heche Gold Processing Limited in Geita District as a case. The study was guided by three research questions from specific objectives of the study. It was formulated and justified through empirical and theoretical reviews; and the conceptual framework which depicts both dependent and independent variables. Case study approach was used to gather data since the study was descriptive. The study used both qualitative and quantitative approaches. Both primary and secondary data were used for analysis; and primary data were obtained through questionnaire and interview methods. The data collected, presented and analyzed in this research dealt with this problem concerning the rights of the workers in small scale mining companies and the rights of the people living in their surroundings. The findings showed that mining companies understand corporate social responsibility but they do not apply it while, workers do not understand corporate social responsibility given that they don‟t know all their rights as workers. The study recommends that, the employer should practice corporate social responsibility in respect of the rights of the workers; observance of environmental and labour laws by small scale mining companies; Government intervening and control of small scale mining companies in relation to the understanding and application of corporate social responsibility and training of the workers and making them aware of their rights.
