dc.description This study is about the Role played by fishing in poverty alleviation taking Kigamboni ward in Dar es Salaam as a case study, specifically the study aimed at determining socio-economic contribution of fishing sector in poverty curbing, ascertaining the role of local government in developing fishing sector and assessing challenges faced by fishermen in fishing chain value. Collection of data involved both secondary and primary, whereby snowball sampling technique obtained 120 respondents. The findings show that there are some challenges facing the industry, such challenges are poor fishing vessels which hinder them to acquire large output, existence of the foreign fishermen who use modern fishing equipments which help them to travel to deep sea and catch a lot of fishes compared to local fishermen, poor Government support, lack of reliable and affordable loans from financial institutions which charge high interest rates that cannot be afforded by local fishermen, and availability of pirates which prevent fishermen to travel to far sea avoiding to risk their lives. The law that is guiding this study is ‘Tanzanian fisheries Act no.22 of 2003, an act that replaced the fisheries act 1970 to make provision for sustainable development, protection, conservation, regulation and control of fish and fish products’. The conclusions driven from the study findings show that the industry has succeeded in providing fishermen with income and youth with employment opportunity. The study recommends that Government should ensure that fishermen are assisted through fishing extension officers to identify the major problems facing them with the intention of coming up with the solution, the intervention of other stakeholders such as NGOs to assist fishermen in their activities, formulation and improvement of policies supporting the fishing sector in order to preserve the rights of the local fishermen in fishing value chain.
