dc.description Employee commitment, productivity and retention issues are emerging as the most critical workforce management challenges of the immediate future, driven by employee loyalty concerns, corporate restructuring efforts and tight competition for key talent. For many firms surprise employee departures can have significant effect on the execution of business plans and may eventually cause a parallel decline in the productivity. Thus this research was executed in order to find out ways to improve labor productivity and the performance of organizations. Motivation seems to be one of the most important tools of managing employee performance and increase their productivity. Organizations design motivation systems to encourage employees to perform in the most effective way but also to attract and retain key talents. The general objective of this paper was to assess the role of work motivation in enhancing employee’s performance in organizations. To realize this purposive sampling was used to select key informants for interview and simple random sampling was used to ensure representation of respondents from different strata. Questionnaires were distributed to respondents from Chinese Tanzanian Joint shipping Company. The company was selected to represent other shipping company in Tanzania in which employees are dissatisfied as a result of ineffective use of work motivation. The study was conducted by issuing a questionnaire to all employees working at the company headquarters in Dar-es salaam. The employees that participated were full-time and part time from all different departments and have been working at the company for varied periods of time. The questionnaire was splinted into four different parts and the data derived was analyzed and presented in this report. The results from the research proved that motivation is purely and simply a leadership behavior that is essential for the achievements of organizational goals. This was supported by the information obtained from the field data as well as the secondary data obtained from the financial reports. Motivational tools available at Sinotaship includes promotion, recognition, bonus, training, health services, good working conditions and good company policy and employees have become highly loyal to the organization and take work as part of their lives and tasks as their ethical responsibilities
