dc.description The study examined the challenges faced by firms providing cleaning services to public organizations. The study was conducted at MIC Cleaners offices in Dar es Salaam. The objectives of the study were to determine the criteria used in selecting cleaning companies, to examine the procedures used in awarding tender to those firms to establish whether those firms are paid by the concerned organizations on time and to find out obstacles faced by clearing companies in discharging their duties. The study collected data using interviews, questionnaire, observation and through documentary review. Data were analysed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences and Microsoft Excel. The study found that organizations select companies based on their experience, quality of services and cost of providing services when compared by other other competing companies. The normal procedure of awarding tender include evaluation of bid, awarding contract, bonds and parent company guarantees and advice from the management to decide if it is worth awarding contract to a company. The study further found that payments to the outsourced companies are delayed. This situation creates problem to cleaning companies in paying their staff on time. It was also found that, obstacles facing cleaning companies in discharging their duties include: poor performance by staff, poor training programmes, low motivation from employees, poor supervision and accidents in the work places. The study concludes that both parties have a role to play in the process, whereby, organizations should give contract to the deserved companies that meet all the expectations in providing services. The organization awarding tender should make payment on time to avoid any inconvenience on their side. Cleaning companies should strive to provide best services as expected. The study recommends that that MIC Cleaners should provide training to new employees, increase salary and increase health and safety coverage to her employe
