This dissertation report examined the effectiveness of the New Public Management Approach. The study was conducted at the Tanzania Meteorological Agency and at Weights and Measures Agency in Dar es Salaam Tanzania.
The study used case study approach. It further employed both the secondary and primary data. For the primary data the questionnaire tool was used as well as an in-depth interview for all respondents. The secondary data were sourced from relevant previous research reports, books, and the web resource.
The new public management approach is the most efficient model; the motivation of NPMA is on performance and discipline specific to the market ones. NPMA is efficient and effective if properly adhered to. However, based on the findings of this study we conclude that very little efficiency have been achieved in the Tanzania Public Sector due to the fact that NPMA is not known to many public employees and the general public. As an example, eighty one point seven percent of all respondents interviewed on whether they were aware of NPMA they replied no! We recommend that employees of the central government, local government, government agencies, and all other public institutions must be sufficiently trained on the New Public Management Approach, and that it should take place at least for a year; then, training should be a continuous process, regular trainings thereafter must be carried out in order to shape those already trained and the new comers in the public sector. It is after this stage then focused studies can be done as an evaluation of the effectiveness of NPMA.
