dc.description The main objective of this study was to assess the impact of mining sector in Tanzania towards poverty reduction and to extract challenges that are faced by the community around the mining areas. This research adopted both quantitative and qualitative method of data collection, analysis and reporting in providing socio-economic development effects of the activities of the Bulyanhulu Gold Mine Limited (BGML). Also, the study depended on secondary data such as journals, publications, and primary data from households, and Opinion leaders for its sources of information, analyses and reporting. Mineral production activities in BGML have increased tremendously with its attendant revenue for the government. A significant manifestation of this outcome is the increasing number of people and growth of township (Kahama district) recently and much exploratory work going on currently. More often than not, one of the main objectives of the government for granting mining concessions to the mining company (BGML) was to generate employment and revenue to improve the living standards of the people in the mining areas specifically, and that of Kahama district as a whole. This study was conducted on the main assumption that economic profitability may result to poverty reduction with social and environmental sustainability. Taking Bulyanhulu Gold Mine Limited in KAHAMA district mining area as a case study and with data from different sources on economic opportunities, social security and environmental damage, a cursory impact analysis was performed to give a general picture of consequences of the BGML mining activities on poverty reduction through difference opportunity brought by BGML but there has not been a corresponding review of environmental policies to take account of the damage caused to the environment and to sources of livelihood. In conclusion, the study showed that the best way of eradicating poverty in the community around the mining area is by educating the community about the development projects provided by the investors (BGML). To be responsible and participate on the projects and activities provided by BGML. This was considered as a way of giving the community which will help in eradicating poverty.
