The aim of this study was to assess the value of the blue economy in employment
creation in Tanzania. Considering that the shipping industry occupies the largest part
of the blue economy and hence it was purposefully selected for this assessment. Prior
to this study, earlier studies on the shipping economy were silent about the value of
the shipping industry in employment creation. This motivated the researcher to
conduct this study focusing on Dar es Salaam Port as a case.A total of 33 directors
representing each shipping companies and agencies operated in the Port formed a
target population of the study. Among them, only 30 (90.9%) directors were
purposefully selected to form the samples. Both questionnaires and documentary
review were used as data collection tools so as to realize three objectives: to find out
the ways which shipping activities have stimulated growth of other sub-sectors at Dar
es Salaam Port, to examine the usefulness of shipping activities in employment
creation at Dar es Salaam Port and to estimate number of direct employment created
by shipping industry at Dar es Salaam Port.
The finding results revealed that shipping activities stimulated the growth of other
subsectors such as port services, insurances, food and beverages, consumption of
goods and services and restaurants by catalyzing their establishment and supporting
their development. Also, it was found that the shipping industry was very useful in
employment creationas it employed individuals in the productive age by contributing
towards availability and accessibility of employment in the Port. The study estimated
that about 811 individuals were directly employed in shipping activities at Dar es
Salaam Port. The conclusion and implication of the study is that the blue economy
had a crucial value in employment creation in Tanzania. If the Government of
Tanzania could develop the blue economy it is likely to assist in reducing the
unemployment rate of about 30% characterizing Dar es Salaam region by ensuring
availability and accessibility of employment in the Dar es Salaam Port. |
