dc.description The study set out to assess the impact of corporate governance principles on the performance of private secondary schools in Tanzania. The study was structured along four specific objectives which aimed to look at the extent to which board practices, disclosure and transparency, fulfillment of shareholders rights and board commitment influenced the performance of private secondary schools. From a methodological point of view, the study relied on a descriptive, mixed approach, whereby both questionnaire and interview guides were adopted for the study. The study was conducted in three municipalities of Kinondoni, Ilala and Temeke, where the researcher selected 20 schools, from which the researcher went on to administer the questionnaire to 80 respondents. Majority of the respondents said there are no defined roles and responsibilities for the members. Majority of the respondents said there are no defined roles and responsibilities for the members. majority of the respondents indicated that they are not sure if, in case of grievances, they would have a better redress framework. the majority of the respondents, they say that most school boards in private secondary schools are week. Majority of the respondents indicated that the respondents disagreed that the board members act in the best interests of the company and the shareholders. It was recommended that awareness and sensitization be conducted among school directors on the role of corporate governance principles. In addition, there the need to have these principles in easily understandable and digestible language.
