dc.description In Tanzania there have been efforts on promoting small scale industries to reduce unemployment rate and develop its economy. The impressive growth in industrial workforce was in consonant with the early industrial policy and strategies which deepened and widened light manufacturing activities inherited from independence. The purpose of his study was to assess the role of small scale industries in creating employment in Tanzania focusing Kinondoni District. The research objectives were first to identify the sources of income to start small scale industries, second to determine the contribution of tailoring industries in minimizing unemployment problem in Kinindoni District, and third to determine the challenges facing in initiating tailoring industries and securing markets. The study employed a case study research design to respond to the research objectives. The qualitative and quantitative research methods were employed in this study. The qualitative method used interview and focus group discussion to collect data. The quantitative method used semi-structured questionnaires to collect data. Qualitative data were analyzed using deductive approach, and quantitative data were analyzed using SPSS 21.0. The study findings revealed many challenges hindering effective development of tailoring industry in Kinondoni District including lack of tailoring skills among the business owners and tailors, low level of machinery because of lack of capital to buy heavy equipment, poor infrastructure and lack of reliable electricity. The study concluded that job creation has been greatly contributed towards improving and provision of employment among youth. The study recommend that the government as well as policy makers should create policy framework that will enable good working environment, good and sufficiently environment that are friendly to the owners of the tailoring business to enhance growth of the industry and minimizing the problem of unemployment.
