dc.description The study on community policing in local communities in Tanzania was conducted at Kimbiji Village - Kigamboni District in Dar es Salaam Region. The specific objectives of the study were: to explore the awareness of the local community on COP, to examine the attitudes of the local residents towards community policing, to investigate challenges facing both local community and police in implementing COP and to recommend on how community policing in the local community can be improved. The study used a case study research design that engaged both qualitative and quantitative approaches in the process of data collection and analysis. Data was collected by using questionnaires, interviews and observation guide. The study involved 100 respondents as a sample. These entailed residents of the area, police officers and the local authority leaders of the area. The study used cluster sampling, convenience sampling and purposive sampling in selecting the sample. Data was analyzed with the aid of graphs with percentage computations and paragraph explanations to interpret the findings. The study found that the community was not aware of COP. Moreover, most of the community members had negative attitudes about the way COP is being handled by the Police officers but also the same community members were optimistic that COP can be a solution if there are better approaches in implementing it. The challenges which faced COP implementation included lack of awareness, lack of facilities and equipment for the workforce, lack of willingness by some stakeholders and under deployment of police officers in the area. The study concluded that there was no community policing implemented in Kimbiji Village and the recommendations were to foster COP awareness through educating the communities, increase police officer deployment, government avail more funds to enable acquisition of facilities and equipment as well as training for skills acquisition for stakeholders.
