Although various banks have been using CSR to support the community, but there is no academic evidence that indicates the contribution of CRDB bank CSR program particularly Dodoma branch in promoting the welfare of citizens of Dodoma. Therefore, this research was set up to investigate the contribution of corporate social responsibility (CSR) in promoting social welfare of Tanzanians. Particularly, the study was meant to examine the way CRDB bank arrives at the decision of providing CSR to the community, to assess whether community is involved when the bank determines what should be offered through CSR, to identify kinds of contributions made by CRDB bank in promoting social welfare of Dodoma citizens and to assess challenges that limit CSR program delivery to Dodoma citizens.
This study used explanatory case study with a sample size of 166 respondents who were obtained through purposive and convenience sampling techniques. Questionnaire, interview and documentary sources were used to collect relevant data related to the study. Data were analysed quantitatively and qualitatively.
It was found that, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) was responsible for initiating the decision of providing support through CSR program as well as what should specifically be offered. Moreover, there was no fixed time to arrive at the decision of providing CSR. The beneficiaries however were not involved when the bank determined what should be offered but they were involved at the implementation of the project. Health and nutrition to the community/institution members, education provision, water assistance initiatives, supporting local community/institutions and credit provisions were kinds of contributions made by CRDB bank to the community. Nevertheless, low knowledge with local community about CSR programs was a major challenge/constraint that limited CSR program delivery to the community.
It is concluded that despite the challenge of low knowledge with local community/institution about CSR program, but the program has been the fundamental aspect in bringing social economic development in the community of Dodoma in the area of health, education and environment.
