This study explored the Catholic Church Role in shaping social leadership development in Tanzania: A case of Tanzania Episcopal Conference (TEC). The main objective of this study was to explore the Catholic Church Role in shaping social leadership development in Tanzania.
This was a qualitative study where its research designed was explorative under case study. Its data collection method employed interview. Its data collection technique was on based on Key Informant Interview. The study population for this study was the Catholic Church and the study sample was Tanzania Episcopal Church. The sample size for the study was two members of nine departments of TEC. The study used the social doctrine of the Church as the study theory.
The study major findings were the Catholic Church shapes social leadership development in Tanzania through her education programs in their Institutes. That, the Catholic Church social leadership centres are no longer active. That the Catholic Church strategy in influencing leadership and politics is not so direct but through producing local middle labour and the involvement of the institution of the laity into national leadership affairs.
The study recommendations were that, the Catholic Church should make social community centres active as they were before. The Catholic Church should ensure that pastoral letters are written by the research social centres as it was before in-order to reflect things on ground. The Catholic Church should increase her efforts in molding the youth group in order to be more active in social issues than today. It was also recommended that for other scholars need to invest in researching the stand of the Catholic Church on social credit doctrine.
The study therefore concluded that the Catholic Church is shaping social leadership development in Tanzania through her teachings, her established centres and other services. The study revealed that the Church has been active in education from the beginning of its establishment. It was also recorded that Mission stations were always for human improvement for the surrounding population. Social leadership training Centres apart from schools were established the Catholic Action movements, moral training in Catholic schools, women education and nutrition. Social training centre at Nyegezi Bukumbi Pastoral Institute, other diocese had training for administrative skills such as Msimbazi Centre are the classical evidence of the contributions of the Catholic Church in social leadership development in Tanzania.
