dc.description The main purpose of the study was to assess the challenges facing Small and Medium Entrepreneurs access to finance from financial institutions. The study intended to identify factors hinder small and medium entrepreneurs access to finance from financial institutions, examine at what extent national economic empowerment policy facilitate small and medium entrepreneurs to access finance from financial institutions in Tanzania and also to find out measures to be taken to improve SMEs access t finance from financial institutions in Tanzania. The researcher has been able to collect data information from 100 targeted respondents from four markets Mirongo, Mbugani, Mlangomoja and Makoroboi in Mwanza City Council. The cross-section data were used in the study and the main data collection tools used in the study were questionnaires and interview both non-probability and purposive sampling techniques were employed in the study. The collected data were analysed by using Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS), Microsoft Excel Spreadsheet. From the study the researcher the following factors that hinder SMEs in accessing finance from financial institutions in Tanzania high-interest rate on the loan, short grace period, lack of entrepreneurship education, difficult to understand the process of obtaining a loan. Also, the researcher discovered that national economic empowerment policy does not facilitate or influence SMEs to access finance in Tanzania. Moreover, the researcher discovered some measures to be taken to increase the accessibility of small and medium entrepreneurs to finance from financial institutions in Tanzania those measures are an increase of grace period, reduction of interest rate, provision of seminars and training the entrepreneurs and reducing bureaucracy in the loan application process
