The research is focused on the protection of child’s rights in primary schools in
Tanzania. Corporal punishment has become a hindrance towards the protection of
child rights in primary schools, the effects of corporal punishment adversely affects
the child rights in Tanzania. The research was worth researching because child as
vulnerable being needs to be protected so as they cannot be harmed by the acts of
adults, and Tanzania as a member of various International instruments on the
protection of the child has to adhere to the protection of children rights so as to
promote the best interest of the child. By pointing out the effects of corporal
punishment to child rights and how they affect the right of a child the goal of the
protection of child’s rights can be reached specifically in education sector.
The research was carried out in Dar-Es-Salaam Region and Morogoro region as
sample for urban and rural areas. The methods used in collecting data was interview,
observation, documentary review and field research. The major objective being the
protection of child right in primary schools which was achieved through pointing out
and elaborate on effects of corporal punishment on children’s rights. The research
came to find out that corporal punishment infringes most of the child’s rights in
primary school. And the application of corporal punishment does not adhere to the
enacted regulations as the teachers are highly abusing the laws.
The research concluded that, corporal punishment is not effective in primary school
setting which is the basic foundation of education were a child acquires the basic
knowledge which is going to help through his life, if a child will be exposed to
torture today, then he will live with the notion that violence is the best solution to the
problem. Last, the research recommends for the repeal of the provision of laws that
justify for corporal punishment.
