dc.description The study assessed on the role of training and development towards organization performance, A case of Lindi Municipal Council. The study had three specific objectives; to examine how on job training influence organization performance, to examine how off job training influence organization performance and to examine factors affecting implementation of a training programs in Lindi Municipal council. The study had a total population of 50 respondents in different department at Lindi Municipal Council and by using formula the sample size driven as 33 respondents for data collection, data were collected by using questionnaires documentary and interview. The findings showed that the Training of employees helps individuals to learn how to be more effective at work by modifying knowledge, and skills through learning experience to obtain effective performance as on job and off job modality of training emphasized. The expectation is that, better training and development programs, together with other factors act as motivations to an employee and help to improves organization performance, which in the end will contribute to the growth of the organization and sustainability. The need to educate and train employees is critically essential, and this is because the achievement of organizational goals depends on the development of employees in accordance with environmental changes. The research was guided by case study design where by Lindi municipal council become the source of getting data. On the other hand, despite of the presence of the training policy at municipal, employees are not aware of the training policy. This has brought about a negative perception of employees towards the whole process of training programmes. Lastly, despite the successfulness of training and programmes there are these challenges; shortage of funds, employees‟ preference to certain kinds of training program, favoritism and failure of some employees to transfer what they learnt. Based on findings presented, analyzed and discussed in this research work, the study recommends the following: Training policy should be timely reviewed; On the other hand, training facilities should be improved and used according to the nature of employees and nature of the training programme conducted. The management should seek for enough funds which support the whole training process
