This research report focuses on the effectiveness of the law governing Prostitution in Tanzania Mainland. This research critically analyses how the Law governing prostitution is implemented and as to what extent it is efficient and to expose the vagueness of the law in combating prostitution in Tanzania.
The law governing prostitution sound to be effective in restricting prostitution. However, its enactment, enforcement and implementation is still in question or criticism since the law is in adequate in combating the vice as prostitution activities are increasing rapidly in a wide range across the country.
The study was conducted at Kinondoni with in Dares Salaam Region through field study. The methods used in collecting data are documentary review and interview in gathering information from enforcement agents, legal practitioners and ordinary citizens.Italsoinvolvedsampleof20respondents and random sampling was employed.
This study found out that there is vagueness in enforcement and Implementation of laws governing prostitution and it was concluded that corruption, collusion of enforcement agents and prominent prostitutes, insufficient coordination between enforcement agents and ordinary citizens, inadequate education to ordinary citizens to participate in sharing information of prostitutes and inadequacy of law in criminalizing prostitutes are the barriers that hinders effective implementation of the law governing prostitution in combating the vice as an outcome it leads to rapid growth of prostitution.
This study recommends that the government should impart awareness to the
Community on the law and enhance their participation, provide trainings to
Enforcement agents in modern techniques of inspections and investigations
of prostitutes, legislation review and improvement of socio– economic condition to women and girls for the sake of effective enforcement and implementation of the law governing prostitution in Tanzania.
