This study aimed at assessing the social security systems in Tanzania, specifically focused on assessing the services provided and the perceptions of the services providers and beneficiaries in Dar Es Salaam City.
In that case, the study was mainly guided by two specific objectives namely: to assess the perceptions of the PSSSF managerial staff on effectiveness of the old and new social security systems in Tanzania and two; to assess perception of the beneficiaries on the viability of the new social security system in Tanzania. The study was undertaken using descriptive case study design in which the qualitative and quantitative data were both collected. The quantitative data were collected through questionnaire and qualitative data through interviews. The SPSS version 23.0 software was used to organize and manage the quantitative data before it was presented and analysed using descriptive statistical methods in particular through the frequency distribution tables and percentages.
The study found that the processes towards accessing social security benefits have always been unfriendly, leading to unnecessary disturbances to the beneficiaries. Employees on the other hand have been unhappy with the old system especially on withdrawal benefits and survival benefits which have been amended in the new system. The study has recommended that the system should be designed to include participants in the informal sector such that they should also enjoy the same benefits as those in formal sector.
