Animals are used by people for many purposes including production of food, clothing, companionship, recreation, scientific research and education. In regards to this, this report discusses Animals Welfare as the ability of animal to cope psychologically, behaviorally and emotionally with their physiochemical and social life environment. The Animal Welfare Act No 19 of 2008 also provides for the manner of protecting the domestic animals through different ways and methods which have to be used to avoid the animal cruelty, injury, pain and distress in term of transportation, slaughtering and housing system.
The focus of animal welfare in the society has increased during the last 50 years. Animal welfare legislation and private standards have developed, and today many farmers within animal production have both governmental legislation and private standards to comply with. Under this study there are numbers of international instruments, domestic laws, institutional framework together with different organization both government and non-government organization that deals with the protection and the welfare of the animals. In this study intentions and values are described that were described in different legislation. And the methods used were questionnaire, interviews and observation. This study shows that the ethical values within a set of legislation or private standards are not always consistently implemented, and it’s not always possible to follow a thread between the intentions mentioned initially and the actual details of the legislation or standard. In addition this study provides an overview of the recommendations of intergovernmental organizations regarding the welfare of beef cattle, pigs, broiler, chickens and laying hens. These organizations are for instance the FAO, the IFC which is part of the World Bank Group, and the OIE. The study has also focuses on private sectors initiatives which are increasingly driving progress on animal welfare being driven by private sector initiatives. Some of these initiatives are in the form of standards established by non-governmental animal welfare organizations
