dc.description |
This study assesses the law regulating trade unions and pointing out how the trade unions protect the rights of workers. This includes efficiency of the laws governing trade unions in addressing the protection of the rights of workers. It also determines the challenges encountered by trade unions in addressing the rights of workers.
The researcher employed questionnaire and interviews in collecting data. Documentary reviews were made to also obtain data for purpose of this study. Different respondents such as workers and officials from trade unions were interviewed particularly respondents from TUGHE.
The study found out that Tanzania has established various trade unions for purpose of protecting the workers’ rights. However, it has been found that Trade Unions are not working effectively in ensuring the realization of the rights of workers. This is associated by various reasons which includes limited freedom in performing its duties; limited number of active members; disunity among the trade unions and labour stakeholders; lack of adequate personnel and technology; inadequate financial position; lack of awareness; and persistence of various workers’ problems. For instance, shortages of health centers, lack of working instruments, medicines and unpaid staff claims constituted poor working condition. This also proves the inefficiency of the trade unions in resolving the challenges facing workers.
In order to achieve efficiency of trade unions in protecting the rights of workers, legislature and the policymakers are required to make amendment to the laws to ensure the trade unions are given power in realization of the rights of workers. |
