dc.description It was found that low premium rate charged is the most factor influencing underwriting loss on Non-life insurance in Tanzania, followed by poor underwriting practices and increased claims costs. Non-remittance of premiums to insurers by insurance intermediaries was revealed as a fourth factor influencing underwriting loss along with increased management expenses that was revealed as the fifth factor. The topic understudy was factors influencing underwriting loss on non-life insurance in Tanzania taking a number of selected insurance companies operating in Dar es Salaam as case study. The study was conducted based on four research objectives based on assessment of the procedures influencing underwriting loss on non-life insurance; assess of the factor influencing underwriting loss on non-life insurance. explore the challenges influencing underwriting loss on non-life and to find out the factors militating underwriting loss on non-life insurance. In achieving its goal or target of these four research objectives, the researcher employed questionnaires as tool for collecting data. The researcher had intended to have a sample of 50 respondents in gathering information. Further still the study presented a number of concepts and models from different literature so that the researcher would have the general knowledge on the research variables. The findings indicated that the industry is also facing challenges such as stiff competition, rate under-cuttings which TIRA should address with insurance stake holders so that a health competition is being maintained without unnecessary undercutting and spoiling the market and avoid huge losses due to poor underwriting as those witnessed from the year 2010 to 2014. Remarkable growth of premiums income has been recorded for the past 5 years, (2010- 2014) but underwriting results were negative. The study also found out that insurance industry in Tanzania need to take some necessary measures in order to eliminate underwriting losses and improve underwriting performance. The measures required to be taken by insurance industry in Tanzania.
