In most of the developing countries specifically in Africa, the quality supply of safe
and healthy water services has been a nightmare for the past decades. This study
aimed at assessing the challenges and opportunities for water supply projects
implementation in informal settlements in Tanzania. The study specifically looked at
the extent to which financial resources influence the implementation of successful
water supply projects in informal settlements, opportunities of investing in water
supply projects in Dar es Salaam informal settlements as well as the factors
influencing successful implementation of the implementation of water supply
projects in Dar es Salaam informal settlements. The study was conducted in Dar es
Salaam, concentrating on areas where most of the residents are living in informal
settlements. The wards of Mwananyamala, Manzese, Tandale, Mbagala, Buguruni
and Tandika were used as the areas with mushrooming of informal settlements the
case study research design was employed in the study which was DAWASA the
responsible authority of ensuring quality water supply in the informal settlements.
The study has discovered that revealed that the availability of quality water supply in
the informal settlements of Dar es Salaam is not satisfactory. The study further
discovered that the financial strength of DAWASA to run the water supply projects
in the informal settlements is weak despite the support from the stakeholders. Despite
the challenges facing DAWASA, the authority is still having the opportunities
implementing water supply projects in the informal settlements due to the number of
factors such as the increase of water service demand which attracts the investors in
the water service projects. The study recommends DAWASA to develop strategies of
attracting stakeholders from the private sector through Private Public Partnership
(PPPs) to finance the waters supply projects in the informal settlements particularly
as well as increasing the level of water service bills collection. |
