The study aimed at assessing the role of IPP broadcasting media in promoting LGAs free and fair Election of 2019 in Tanzania. The study specifically aimed at examining the coverage of IPP broadcasting media on civic and voter education towards 2019 LGA Election in Tanzania; determine the extent that IPP broadcasting media effectively mobilized people’s participation in the 2019 LGA Election in Tanzania as well as; ascertaining the relationship between IPP broadcasting media and the government in facilitating free and fair LGA Election of 2019 in Tanzania.
The case study research design was used in the study for the aim of obtaining the in-depth information on the role of media in facilitating free and fair LGA election. IPP Broadcasting Media of ITV and Radio One were used. The total sample size of 100 respondents was involved in the study involving the IPP staff as well as citizens who participated in the LGA election of 2019. The researcher applied both purposive sampling and simple random sampling techniques with the aim of avoiding research biasness as well as to insure the validity and reliability of the study.
The findings from the study revealed that, IPP broadcasting media played a vital role in facilitating the free and fair 2019 LGA election of Tanzania. The media was effective in mobilizing citizens to participate in the election, providing the voters education, covering and broadcasting news which aimed at influencing free and fair LGA election of 2019. The researcher also discovered that the country does not have specific policy of guiding the involvement of media in facilitating free and fair election and democracy in general. Based on that, the researcher recommends for the formulation of a specific policy to guide the participation of media in facilitating democratic election.
