dc.description A Dissertation Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Masters of Business Administration in Corporate Management (MBACM) of Mzumbe University
dc.description The study aimed at assessing the factors that impede or hinder Informal sector workers from joining the social security schemes. The study was based on three specific objectives that guided the process of data collection and these were; to determine informal sector workers awareness of the presence of social security schemes in Tanzania; to determine if informal sector workers know the benefits of joining social security schemes and; to establish factors that inhibit informal sector workers to join social security schemes in Tanzania. The study research design engaged a survey cross-section type, where gathering of data from different groups at one point or area could be easily archived. Purposive and random sampling techniques where used in identifying and analyzing the sample from the main group of informal sector workers. The sample size included 103 respondents who were; one hundred informal sector workers drawn from eight (8) workers categories by aid of random sampling and three officers from NSSF who were selected with the aid of purposive sampling method.. The study engaged both qualitative and quantitative approaches in data collection that also engaged questionnaires and interviews. Documentary review was as well used to make reference with the findings of the study during data analysis. Findings revealed that there were a number of factors that impede the informal sector workers from joining the social security schemes. Among these were; policy based, social security scheme based and individual based factors that all contribute to sidelining of the sector. The study therefore made recommendations that require the authorities to review the social security policies and ensure that the informal sector is equally included, more over the social security schemes to make strategies and programs of outreach that will make the informal sector workers and employers get full awareness of the schemes and the benefits
