This study examines the role of courts and local government authorities in improving road safety and reducing road accident in Tanzania which are increasing. Data were collected through interviews and questionnaire. Findings indicated that safety measures have little contributions in reducing the problem of road traffic accidents. It was noted that the causes of road accidents are many and varied such as human factor, infrastructural, environmental, situational and mechanical factors but the study focused primarily on the legal implications including the laws established to maintain road safety and how do laws contribute in reducing road accidents and promoting road safety measures in Tanzania.
Finally, the study recommends that penal sanction should be imposed on careless drivers and those who overload their cars or driver defective cars. Also, Road Traffic Act needs to be amended to impose serious fines and penalties on reckless drivers and car owners. |
