This study examines effectiveness of the Law regulating Road Safety in Tanzania. The study combined both primary and secondary methods of data collection. The primary method of data collection involved the use of open- ended and closed-ended Questionnaire and unstructured Interviews including the use of various legal documents such as case laws, reports, dissertations, statutes and text books as secondary data.
Findings show that, the Law regulating Road Safety in Tanzania in Combating road accidents is not in line with the contemporary economic and social development. Most of the provisions are outdated compared with the current situation resulting to poor enforcement mechanism of the law, ignorance of traffic laws, less punishment, poor supervision, failure to create a mechanism of combating corruption among of Police Officers, poor roads situations and poor training Drivers.
The researcher recommends effective implementation of the National Transport Policy, harmonization of our laws with international instruments and sub-regional on road traffic. Some provisions of the Law regulating Road Safety in Tanzania also have to be amended for provision of strong punishment to offenders. |
