The study examined the influx of foreign workers employed in Dar es Salaam City
tourist hotels namely Dar Es Salaam Serena Hotel, Hyatt Regency Dar es Salaam,
the Kilimanjaro, New Africa and Kunduchi Beach Hotel and Resort, and Double
Tree by Hilton Dar es salaam-Oysterbay. The study is very important since tourism
is one among economic sectors that generates economic growth and creates
employment. The specific objectives were to find out the extent and skills of
foreign worker in tourist Hotels in Dare es Salaam, to find out if employment of
foreign workers has created unemployment to indigenous people, to established
relationships in employment (numbers and positions) between employed foreigners
and indigenous Tanzanians in tourist hotels in Tanzania, so as to ascertain if there
are real bottlenecks that hinder Tanzanians from getting jobs in major tourist hotels
of Dar es Salaam. Furthermore, the study sought to find solutions to the findings.
The study employed Survey research design whereby Sample analysis was based
on 100 workers chosen randomly through the use of computer/calculator. Data
collection was done through structured questionnaires which were issued to
different levels of respondents who confidently with varying degree of freedom
filled the questionnaires, also interviews were conducted to collect more
information that could not be collected through the use of questionnaires. The
research findings indicated that, foreign workers lower the accessibility of local
people employment into tourist hotels. The study found out that foreigners working
in tourist hotels most of them holds managerial positions while, there were only
few local nationals in managerial positions this implies that most of Tanzanians
were employed in the lower ranks as cleaners, cooks among others. Therefore, the
government policies and stakeholders must aim at increasing the number of
indigenous people employees in tourist hotels. Moreover, the study recommends
that there must be a significant improvement in knowledge and training to
Tanzanians to increase efficiency. At the same time, government should make sure
that foreign workers and investors are advised to change their perception on
Tanzanian’s capabilities in managing tourist hotels.
