This study aimed at assessing the contribution of rural-urban migration to poverty
alleviation among youth migrants in Kinondoni Municipal. Specifically, the study
described the activities undertaken by migrant youth to survive in urban areas,
investigated the contribution of these activities to the wellbeing of the youth, and
identified the push factors influencing out-migration and identifying the effect of
migrant’s youth on urban livelihoods.
The researcher have selected randomly 5 wards out of 35 wards in Kinondoni
Municipal namely Ubungo, Mwenge, Manzese, Kinondoni, and Magomeni due to
the fact that these wards accommodate more migrants who involved in trading
activities than other ward in Kinondoni Municipal. A sample of 120 respondents was
selected to avoid biasness. In order to answer research question and to meet research
objectives, judgemental or purposive sampling technique was used because of the
targeted group of migrant’s youth.
The study argues that decision to migrate is not voluntary. It is influenced by
economic imbalance between rural and urban areas in the context of money
circulation and it is a combination of difficult economic conditions and poor returns
from agriculture as well as lack of alternative, non agricultural employment, and lack
of business opportunities in rural areas. It’s also argued that rural-urban youth
migration has negative impact in both out-migration and the in-migration areas.
The study suggests therefore that a lasting solution to the rural-urban youth migration
can only be one which has a national character, addressing both the macro and micro
level dimensions. It is proposed also that the government must review its policies
with the view of re-emphasizing rural development. |
