The study focused on assessing the factors that contribute to poor performance case
study of Temeke district. Poor performance of science subject in secondary schools
was observed for many wards schools in Tanzania. Azimio, Pendamoyo, Tandika
and Miburani secondary schools are among of the schools affected with poor
performance. The schools located in Temeke district in Dar es Salaam region.. To
achieve this, specific objectives were formulated including to determine factors
which influence the academic performance of students in community secondary
schools at Temeke district; to determine the relationship between parents teacher
social economic status and poor academic performance of students and to examine
the relationship between students’ former school background and poor academic
performance of students secondary level at Temeke district and to find out
investigate the efforts made by the government in addressing those constraints. A
sample of ninety one (91) respondents was selected and data collected through
questionnaires, interview and Focus Group discussion (FGDs). Data were analyzed
both qualitatively and quantitatively and found out that inadequate of teaching and
learning resources, negative attitude of Students toward subjects, teachers job
disatisification, parental treatment, school location and physical building, English
language as a medium of instruction, teaching methodologies to be among the related
challenges affecting the performance in community secondary schools in Temeke.
From the findings it is recommended that more effort should be made to improve the
number of teachers, improve teaching and learning facilities including using
overhead projector, Liquid crystal display projector (LCD) project at school level to
enhance positive attitude to students and increases seminars and allowances in order
for teacher to be committed to their work and influence the students to have good
performance in community secondary schools in Tanzania. |
