The aim of the study was to identify the impact of information technology in supply chain
management within an organization. The study examined the circumstances surrounding
the information technology system in supply chain, identify and evaluate its impact at
TACAIDS. The study also examined the challenges facing information technology
applications in supply chain management and looked at some areas in which information
technology is applied in supply chain management at TACAIDS. Moreover, the study
looked on ways to improve the performance and responsiveness towards the impact of
information technology in supply chain management.
The study employed a case study approach and collected information from the employees
of TACAIDS; it involved the departments of procurement, stores, finance and accounts,
management information system records and statistics. Both primary and secondary data
were collected and various methods of data collection such as interviews, questionnaires,
observation and document reviews were used in this study. To select the sample, different
sampling techniques such as simple random sampling, judgmental sampling, and
convenience sampling techniques were employed. A total sample of 30 respondents was
chosen. Both qualitative and quantitative techniques were used in collecting and analyzing
data.
The results from the analysis revealed that there are impacts of applying information
technology in supply chain activities such as cost reduction, management of records;
increase the efficiency in ordering process and working with suppliers. In addition the
findings revealed that there are challenges facing IT applications such as inadequate
knowledge of other staffs in using computers, availability of IT infrastructure, cost of
using computers, conditions of IT facilities and public procurement laws and regulations.
The study recommends that, trainings should be given to staffs, TACAIDS need to
organize for IT facilities’ maintenance, since IT facilities are not enough the commission
is advised to add hardware and software to improve the level of IT in SCM. Moreover
policies should be reviewed by the government in order to make necessary steps to
enhance efficient implementation of IT in the organisations.
