Description:
Cervical lesions is a potentially premalignant transformation and abnormal growth (dysplasia) of squamous cells on the surface of the cervix. Is not cancer, and is usually curable. May exist at any one of three stages of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN); CIN1, CIN2, or CIN3. If left untreated, a percentage of cases progress to become cervical cancer, usually cervical squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) a fatal disease that, globally is affecting an estimated 530,000 women each year and leading to nearly 275,000 deaths annually. Diagnosing and treating cervical premalignant lesions is possible by using a „screen-and-treat‟ approach in which the treatment decision is based on a screening test. However the small portion of women that has been screened by VIA and treated with cryotherapy, a national secondary prevention strategy for cervical cancer, their treatment outcomes, factors associated with these outcomes and effectiveness of this intervention has not yet adequately assessed and documented for improvement, roll down and sustainability plans.
