Description:
Background information: Urinary tract infection is challenging yet common and important clinical problem in children. Urinary tract infection occurs when the normal flora from the perineum ascends through the urethra retrograde into the bladder. Urinary tract infection, urgency, incontinence, bladder dysfunction are among the complication of a neurological condition, Cerebral palsy. Cerebral palsy is a neurological condition. It is a result of non progressive brain injury that occurs before completion of maturity, hallmarked by difficulties in neuro-motor control, movement and posture. In Africa the burden of urinary tract infection among cerebral palsy was found to be 38.5% by one study done in Nigeria. In Tanzania the prevalence is not documented and treatment of urinary tract infection is on empirical basis.
Aim: The aim of this study is to determine the burden, etiological agents and antimicrobial sensitivity pattern of urinary tract infection among children with cerebral palsy in Moshi municipality.
Method: This will be a cross-sectional study which will be conducted between September 2016 to March 2017 at CCBRT- Moshi and KCMC. All children 2-18 years with cerebral palsy with or without symptoms of urinary tract infection will be recruited. Data will be collected using questionnaire and laboratory data sheet. Two urine samples will be collected at once for urine dipstick by catheterization and urine culture if the initial sample has leucocytes or nitrates or both. Data will be analyzed using SPSS version 20. Descriptive statistics will be presented using frequency and proportions, means (SD), median (IQR).
Significance: Provide guidance to clinicians in selection of antibiotics which will maximize cure and decrease chance of antibiotics resistance. It will also assist in better teaching and advice of community health workers and parents on UTI in children with CP
