Background information: Open fractures of the leg bones are an orthopedic emergence. An ideal management of the open tibia fractures includes intravenous antibiotics, tetanus prophylaxis, wound debridement, irrigation with plenty of saline and immobilization of the limb. Treatment of open fractures continue to be a challenge for Orthopedic and trauma surgeon as some early treatment recommendations which have been used for some decades lack supporting data . Post traumatic bone infection is a devastating event which compromises the rehabilitation of the patient treatment. The infection increases the cost and duration of treatment causing physical and social losses and affecting the quality of life and the functional independence of the patient. Objective: To determine the effect of timing in antibiotics and wound debridement on infection rate of open tibia fracture attended at KCMC from October 2016 to March 2017 Study design: This is a hospital based prospective study Sampling method and Sample size: A consecutive sampling method will be used, in which all patients admitted in Orthopedic department at KCMC during the study period who meet the inclusion criteria will be considered. Data collection, processing and analysis: Data will be collected from patients, relative and operation notes using structured questioner and processed and analysed using SPSS. The results will be presented in pie charts, graphs and tables.
