Background: Traumatic spinal cord injury has tremendous consequences not only to person’s physical function and independence but predisposes this individual to financial, social, psychological, and other medical complications throughout life. The condition is followed by many secondary medical and psychosocial complications that have detrimental impact on personal health, quality of life and the social aspect. In the developing world the improved care has led to a decreased complications following traumatic spinal cord injury but these conditions such as infections from untreated pressure sores remain the main causes of death in the low income countries. This study will find out what are the morbidity and mortality and factors associated among TSCI patients, the findings will lead health care providers to better and improved services delivery and implement prevention strategies Objective: The objective of this study is to determine the morbidity and mortality and factors associated one year post injury among spinal cord injury patients admitted at KCMC for a period of five years. Materials and Methods: This is a retrospective and cross sectional study design that will be conducted at KCMC orthopedic and medical records department, checklist will be designed to collect information about demographic data, medical history, circumstances and time of injury, time of arrival to KCMC after injury. Initial medical and neurological examination including vital signs, level of consciousness using GCS, temperature charts while in the ward, 2 hourly turning charts, radiological findings and the medical and surgical treatment received, secondary complications recorded in the files and the treatment received for the complications will all be collected. SPSS version 20 will be used to calculate percentages, proportions and means will be used to summaries the findings. The results will be presented in frequency tables, histograms and pie charts and the statistical relationship will be tested for statistical significance among the variables using Chi-square test and Chi-square distribution. Values for p<0.05 will be considered as significant.
