dc.description BACKGROUND According to WHO around 303 000 women worldwide died due to maternal causes in 2015, 99% percent of these deaths occured in developing countries. SSA accounts for 66% these deaths. Tanzania is among of countries which didn’t reach the MDG 5 target in 2015.The country had a target to reduce deaths to 193 per 100,000 live births by 2015. MMR is still high at 398 deaths per 100,000 live births. Skilled Birth Attendant (SBA) utilization is one of key interventions to avert maternal and newborn deaths Reducing maternal deaths to 70/100,000 and increasing deliveries attended by skilled birth attendant personnel to 90% (SBA) by 2030 is a key indicator in SDGs 3. WHO recommends in order to avert maternal mortality at leasts 90% of births should be by SBA.Tanzania had a target to reach SBA use during delivery of 80%, but according to TDHS of 2010 the SBA coverage in Tanzania is still at 51% way below the target. OBJECTIVES To determine the prevalence and factors associated with utilization of Skilled Birth Attendant during delivery among women in Kishapu district, Shinyanga region. METHODOLOGY This was a cross-sectional study that was conducted in February 2016. Study population was women of reproductive age (15-49) in the selected households. Interviews’ using a questionnaire was used for data collection. Data were entered and analyzed using SPSS. RESULTS A total of 256 women were enrolled, their mean age were 31.4 (SD ± 7.3). 219 (85.5%) were reported to delivery at heath facility and 218 (85.2%) were delivered with SBA. Maternal education, participant level of income, counseled on birth preparedness, living within 1 hour from health facility and fare paid less than 2000TZS were significantly associated with utilization of SBA DISCUSSION Prevalence of SBA at Kishapu district was high compared to national target 80% but its lower compared to WHO, 90% target in 2015. Also still behind compared to high income countries had prevalence of 99% (WHO, 2015). The barriers of utilization SBA should be reduced to increase prevalence of SBA at delivery.
