Background
Hypertension is a growing public health problem in Tanzania and Africa as a whole. If left untreated is a major risk factors for myocardial infarction, stroke, renal failure, heart failure and even death. In both economically developed and developing countries, hypertension affects 25% to 35% of adult population. The prevalence rises with age, and was approximately 30% according to the recent community studies. In Tanzania the overall prevalence of hypertension was found to be 41.1% in 1998, for men and 38.7% for women in a survey carried out in Dar es Salaam. However over 80% of the hypertension subjects were not aware that they had high blood pressure.
Broad objective
To determine prevalence, awareness of status and factors associated with hypertension among people aged 18 years and above in Urambo District, Tabora Region.
Methods
The study design was a community based cross sectional survey aimed to ascertain the burden of hypertension as well as identifying awareness of status and associated risk factors of hypertension. The study was conducted in Urambo, Tanzania from May to July 2016. People aged 18 years who fit the inclusion criteria and signed informed consent were recruited for this study. Swahili questionnaire was used to collect the required information. |
