dc.description Background: Congenital heart diseases are abnormalities of the heart or great vessels that are present at birth. Congenital heart diseases together with neural tube defects and Downs’ syndrome are the common congenital anomalies (WHO, 2015). Kumar (2013 Chapter 10) states that congenital heart defects contribute 20% to 30% of all birth defects; with the prevalence of approximately 8 in a 1000 live births, the incidence higher in premature infants and in stillborns. The prevalence of congenital heart diseases among children in our setting is not known. Objectives of Study: To Access the types, management and outcomes of Congenital Heart Disease in patients who attended the KCMC Pediatric Department between 7days to 14 years. To describe the demographic characteristics congenital heart disease in children (both inpatient and outpatient) who attended KCMC Pediatric department. To assess the types of congenital heart diseases commonly found in our setting. Also aims at assessing the management including the means of diagnosis of congenital heart diseases. To determine the outcome of management of the patients e.g. morbidity or mortality rate, relationship between outcome and delay in age of diagnosis Study Area: KCMC Pediatric Department and Medical Record department of KCMC. Study population: Children between 7days and 14 years old who attended KCMC pediatric department between 1st April 2010 and 16th June 2016. Methodology: The study design to be used will be Retrospective cross sectional study, aiming at measuring all exposures at once. The study is hospital based with purposive sampling technique. Results and Conclusion Males seem to be more affected than females. Though the number of children with congenital heart disease between April 2010 and 16th June was found to be 101, 25 of them were reported to have died, making this a disease to highly consider. Our setting and the expense of the treatment make the setting liable to many deaths of children with congenital heart disease.
