Background. Bronchoscopes are used in diagnosis and therapeutics of the upper and lower airway pathologies. The outcome of their use is widespread, effective and generally safe but numerous potential complications can occur. Complications may arise from the procedure itself, medication administration (primarily sedation), or patient comorbidities and also manipulations or bleeding (David et al, 2015). Broad Objectives: Objective of this study was to determine the prevalence and outcome of bronchoscopy for patients attending ENT services at KCMC from January 2010 to December 2015. Study design: This study was a retrospective cross sectional hospital based study conducted at KCMC referral hospital based on patient’s medical records. Study Population: The study included all patients who attended ENT services at KCMC from January 2010 to December 2015. Sampling Method: No sampling was done. All patient files who met the inclusion criteria were used. Sample Size Estimation: The sample size was determined by the number of files which meet the inclusion criteria. Data Collection Method: Available information was collected through review of patient’s files and then data were transformed into a data set prepared from which analysis was done. Data Processing and Analysis: Variables were summarized using proportions, median (range) then analyzed using SPSS version 22. Results: A total number of 72 patients were studied. Males were higher than females by the ratio of 1:1.2. The majority of the patients were of 5-9 years age group. The leading clinical presentation was difficult in breathing (61.1%). The outcome of patients who underwent bronchoscopy was complete removal of foreign body (68.1%) where failure of foreign body removal occurred in 11.1% patients. vii Conclusions: Difficult in breathing is the most clinical presentation of patients who underwent bronchoscopy. This involves the 5-9 years age group. Bronchoscopy is the safe approach as diagnostic or therapeutic in this age group.
