dc.description Background Diabetic macular edema (DME) is a complication of diabetic retinopathy it is among the leading cause of blindness. DME is one of the causes that bring changes in the retinal capillaries. The prevalence of DME is high in people suffering from diabetes. By 2030 the prevalence of DME is estimated to rise to 366 million imposing a big burden. The incidence of macular edema in patients with type 2diabetes will be up to 14% in 10 years, and the incidence of macular edema in patients with type 1diabetes is expected to be 29% of type 1over a 25year period. Need for effective treatment of DME becomes urgent. The results from this research will help the clinicians to have knowledge on how the treatment given to DME patients improves their vision through improvement of visual acuity and macular volume reduction. The results obtained from the research will help the ophthalmology department to know the baseline treatment to be given to their patients through knowledge of effectiveness of intravitreal bevacizumab therapy and laser photocoagulation. Objective This study aims to determine the response of treatment of DME among patients who attended at KCMC Ophthalmology clinic from January 2014 to December 2015 in improving the Best Corrected Visual Acuity (BCVA) and macula edema. Methodology This was a retrospective cross sectional study. The study was conducted at Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Centre in the eye department. The study population involved all diabetic macular edema patients who attended at eye clinic at KCMC from January 2014 to December 2015. A purposive sampling was used to obtain the study sample. Data collection forms were used to collect information through record review of patient’s files from medical records. Data was entered and analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Science. (SPSS). Results A total of 163 participants were enrolled in the study. Majority of the participants were male (65.6%) with the mean age of 58.91years. From the study there was no reduction in macular in x both 163 set of eyes after treatment. There was an improvement in visual acuity in both eyes of the participants from 40.5% to 47.2% right eyes and from 39.3% to 41.7% in left eyes. Focal laser photocoagulation therapy was used by 47.9% of the participants that helped in visual acuity improvement and macular volume reduction. Conclusion Little is still known on the response to treatment of DME as very few researches are done especially in Tanzania and East Africa at large. DME patients need to be aware of the seriousness of the disease so as they could always attend hospital follow-ups and get good response of medication. Also from the study there is a need to integrate other modalities of treatment for DME so as to get better response. Also screening for DME should be done involving many areas so patients could be enrolled in treatment regimen early enough.
