dc.description Back ground: Burn injuries have been ranked as second most common accidental death in children younger than 5 years, and the most common cause of accidental death occurring in the homes Burn injuries in children is still a major public health problem in lower and middle income countries (LMIC), the rate of children deaths from burns is currently over 7 times higher in lowand middle-income countries than in high-income countries, since children are the windows hope for the future development and existence of a country, it is a great deal to concern about their health and safety. Broad objectives: to determine the prevalence, etiology and management outcome of burn injuries in children aged less than 14 years among burn patients admitted at KCMC surgical department from Feb 2012- Jan 2015. Methodology: A retrospective cross-sectional study design was used though medical record reviews of patient files, from Feb 2012- Jan 2015(three years study) among burn patient aged less than 14 years admitted at KCMC General Surgery department who met the inclusion criteria. Data obtained were analyzed using statistical package for the social science (SPSS) version 20, and reported inform of frequency tables, graphs and charts. Results:A total of 76 burn patients were enrolled in the study with median age of 3years ranging from 1-14 years. The prevalence of burn injuries in children was found to be 54.80%, occurred mostly in children under 5 years 55 (72.4%), male were mostly affected 47(61.8%) compared to female. Most injuries 74 (97.4%) occurred indoor and were due to scald 59 (77.6%) followed by flame burns 12(15%). Among studied patients, 51 (67.1%) did not receive pre hospital care after sustaining the injury, only 25 (32.9%) received pre hospital care, majority of the patients 18 (23.7%) applied honey and raw egg after injury. Mortality rate was found to be 12 (15.80%), most of death 7(9.2%) were secondary to septicemia. Conclusion:Above all burn injuries are preventable injuries much emphasis should be employed on increases public awareness in preventive measures and standard pre hospital care to burns patients which is one among determinant of management outcome among burn patients.
