dc.description Dissertation (MA Education)
dc.description This study assessed the Effectiveness of Guidance and Counseling in Facilitating Learning among Secondary School Students. Examples were drawn from Dodoma Municipality. Specifically, this study was proposed to ascertain the school based guidance and counselling services currently in place to promote the wellbeing of students; to evaluate the contributions of the available guidance and counselling services to the improvement of students‟ study skills and career development; to evaluate the contribution of the available guidance and counseling services in improving students personal and social welfare in secondary schools; to assess the challenges facing guidance and counseling services in promoting learning among students in secondary schools. I employed a descriptive research design using qualitative research approach and some aspects of quantitative research approach. A total of 152 respondents were involved in the study. This sample included heads of schools, teacher-counsellors and students. Purposive and random sampling techniques were used in selecting the respondents for this study. Data were collected using questionnaire and interviews. The findings of the study revealed that students were not aware of the counselling services provided in school. It is only few students who were aware of the services; however, their tendency of seeking counseling services was minimal. It was further revealed that most of the counselling services provided to students were personal, social, academic and career development. Moreover, the study found that there is a lack of offices and materials, lack of professional teacher-counsellor, lack of financial support which they all hinder the effectiveness of guidance and counseling services in schools. Therefore, the study recommends for the Government to employ qualified teacher-counsellors for effective guidance and counselling services in secondary schools.
