The study aimed at analyzing the management of Inventory Control System (ICS) was done at the Open University of Tanzania (OUT) and 150 respondents participated. The general objective was to evaluate the effectiveness of ICS at the OUT. Specific objectives were to: Identify methods used to manage the ICS, analyze challenges faced by OUT on course of managing ICS and assess the effectiveness of the methods used to manage the ICS at OUT. Case Study research design was employed. Qualitative and quantitative research approaches were used. Data collection methods used were interviews, observation and documentary review. Analysis of data was done based on research objectives and content analysis and SPSS techniques were used. Findings indicated methods used by OUT to manage inventory were: Stock review, mid and annual stocking policies, Just-in-Time and inventory time ratio. Challenges faced by OUT when managing ICS were: Budget constraint, insufficient/competent human resources, identifying and maintaining the right amount of inventory and staff demands. The effectiveness of ICS management included: Achievement of correct data, cost effectiveness, buying in bulky under lower prices, solved the problem of excess and obsolete and the use of software enables adjustment of order quantity and delivery. The conclusion is that challenges which face ICS are manageable. Recommendations include: OUT should establish many methods for effectiveness of ICS and OUT management should do deliberate efforts to solve challenges |
