Description:
ABSTRACT
This study examined the effect of motivation on teacher’s performance in public secondary
schools in Geita District. To address this problem the study was guided by three research
objectives, to determine the types of motivation among the teachers in public secondary schools
in Geita District, to establish the satisfaction level towards motivation offered to the teachers in
public secondary schools in Geita District, to examine the contributions of motivation on
teaching performance in public secondary schools in Geita District.
On methodology, a case study design was applied to describe in detail and in context the unit
under study. To collect data; this study used questionnaires and interview schedules to collect the
required information from different categories of the target population. Document analysis was
also applied to enhance credibility and validity of the findings in this study. The study involved
200 respondents. The collected data were analyzed using simple statistics such as tabulation,
frequencies, explanations, and percentages with the help of statistical package for social sciences
(SPSS). The findings revealed that many teachers are not motivated, not rewarded and
recognized for work they have done, the level of motivation offered to the teachers is very low.
The study concluded that teachers should start their own small business that can supplement their
income, for example they can organize themselves in small groups and start paddy plantations,
pineapple plantation. Teachers should also organize small fundraising activities to raise money to
open up their own SACCOS and VIKOBA that can provide loans among the member teachers
Finally, the researcher suggests further research using other theories of motivation, basing on a
larger sample size in other areas to address other emerging issues such as school management,
career development, compensation, employees’ benefits, recruitment, selection, and placement
and initiation.
