ABSTRACT
This study aimed at assessing the semantic affect of proverbs and gender discrimination in Ki sukuma in Misungwi District. The study explored linguistic aspects used by men in the uses of
discriminatory proverbs against women. The sociolinguistic conditions and contexts those
influence the uses of gender discriminatory proverbs were also explored. The study further
analyzed the selected gender discriminatory proverbs used by the Sukuma people. The attitudes
of women when discriminatory proverbs are used against them were also evaluated, and the
views of Ki-sukuma speakers toward the uses of gender discriminatory proverbs in Sukuma were
also assessed too. The data for this study were collected from 52 respondents through
questionnaire and interview. The study revealed that some proverbs in Ki-sukuma have elements
of gender discrimination in the society. The gender discrimination in proverbs is influenced by
linguistic aspects used by Sukuma society, the sociolinguistic conditions and contexts are applied
to show gender discrimination against women. The selected proverbs of gender discrimination
have also been analyzed, attitudes of women toward gender discriminatory proverbs identified
and views of Ki-sukuma speakers on gender discriminatory proverbs used in the society aired out
by respondents in the field using objectives in the study. The study adopted two design
approaches which are exploratory and descriptive diagnostic research design. The study
recommends that the uses of the proverbs in Ki-sukuma should consider the female gender that
are also human beings, wisdom is to be put in the frontline to solve the problems instead of using
insulted proverbs toward women. The society should create good environments to make the uses
of proverbs in the society having the equal gender balance. This study intent to assess proverbs
and gender discrimination in Ki-sukuma in Misungwi District in Mwanza.
