Influence of Motivational Factors on Job Satisfaction in Local Government Authorities in Tanzania

dc.description Employees who are not satisfied cannot perform their tasks optimally and thus they have to be motivated to perform their tasks effectively and efficiently and thus helping the organization achieve its goals. The purpose of this study was to investigate influence of motivational factors on job satisfaction in local government authorities in Tanzania: A case of Ilemela District Council. The study was guided by three specific objectives‗(i) to determine employees‘ level of motivation at work place at Ilemela district council‗(ii) to determine the influence of extrinsic factors of motivation on job satisfaction at Ilemela District Council. (iii) to determine influence of intrinsic motivation factors on job satisfaction at Ilemela District Council The study adopted descriptive research design incorporating mixed (quantitative and qualitative) approaches. The data was collected through questionnaire of sample of 52 staff members of Ilemela District Council. Data was analyzed using simple descriptive statistics and presented as distribution frequency tables. The study found that majority of district workers rated level of motivation at the council very low to low and only a small percentage rated it high to very high. The study found that majority of the employees were highly satisfied with annual salary increment in their district council and none of the employees was dissatisfied with a salary increment. This study also indicated that most employees (80.8%) were satisfied with their jobs when they relate to their supervisors at personal level so as to create a conducive working relationship that is free of stress and confrontation. It further found that most employees (86.5%) were satisfied with their jobs when they have social interaction with other workers. These results found that if the majority (82.75) of employees are given flexible working hours, they would be motivated to work hard and finish their tasks quickly The study also found out that a manager‘s leadership style has a direct influence on the employees‘ job satisfaction in an organization and preferred the democratic leadership style and most employees would like to be involved in making key decisions in their departments. However, the respondents were moderately satisfied with a promotions policy based on merit and competence. Finally, the study found that most respondents were helped by trainings to improve on their job performance. The study recommended increase in staff salaries, introduce flexible working policy and offer regular training to staff
