ABSTRACT
The study focused on the examining the relationship between employee commitments
and job performance among the government health workers in Nyamagana District
hospital in Mwanza. Both primary and secondary data collection methods were
employed. Quantitative data was entered into Microsoft Excel, thoroughly cleaned,
and then transferred to Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) for analysis. The
qualitative information was analyzed through content and thematic analysis and
findings produced in this report.
From the survey, it is evident that there exists a direct relationship or link between job
performance and commitment and vice versa; and, these are caused by both personal
and external causes. The personal causes includes such issues like negligence, lack of
seriousness and indiscipline to work ethics while the external causes constitutes
mostly managerial, institutional and policies challenges. Other results indicate
widespread lack of quality facilities and equipments at the hospital for execution of
daily hospital facilities. These, in turn, have had an impact on the general staff
working spirit.
Further more, the results indicate that employees were dissatisfied by the working
environment at the hospital and this has lowered their service delivery. The levels of
dissatisfaction increases as you move down the chain with the lower cadre workers
being most dissatisfied. Despite, the low level of dissatisfaction, staffs are willing and
equally able to perform their tasks. Interestingly, service seekers are also not satisfied
with the workings and commitment of the health workers. Majority of the patients

interviewed acknowledged this factor by identifying poor reception and remuneration
systems as possible causes. Commitment is generally lacking among many staffs. In
order to improve on job performance and commitment among health workers in
Nyamagana district hospital a holistic approach need to be taken to address both the
personal and external causes. These would help in tackling the institutional, structural
and policies issues. It should go hand in hand with; involving the staffs in planning,
decision making and executions, provision of training and education on specialized
areas and provision of incentives among others
