Occupation health and safety (OHS) has become an important issue in all organizations
regardless of their size of operations and has been recognized by ILO, (2015). The
purpose of this study was to examine the influence of training programs in promoting
occupational health and safety culture in Tanzanian mining industry- A case of Geita
Gold Mine (GGM).
The study was guided by four specific objectives;
(i) To identify methods used in training needs assessments at Geita Gold Mine (GGM)
(ii) To determine the employees‟ participation in training needs assessment (TNA) in
occupational health and safety issues at GGM.
(iii) To determine the influence of training in improving employees self-awareness in
occupational health and safety culture even
(iv) To identify the influence of training programs factors that enhance employees in
handling occupational health and safety issues/ culture at GGM.
The study surveyed 182 respondents (mine employees) using a questionnaire and
interviews were also conducted with a few employees. The data from questionnaire was
analyzed using simple descriptive statistics with and of SPSS.
The study revealed that GGM uses on job training and in service training methods for
training its employees. The study further indicated TNA is conducted with employees
before designing and implementing training programs. Also the research revealed that
almost all the employees at GGM have been trained on various aspects towards adopting
OHS culture factors found to favour training programs. The training programs factors
that influenced the adoption of OHS culture were: content of training materials, trainers‟
ability, degree of engagement and timing of training and seating arrangement in training
sessions. The study recommended the development of users‟ friendly OHS brochures for
distribution to all GGM employees and conducting targeted/customized OSH training to
different sectors in GGM.
